WTF PRE-MARKET REPORT
Friday, SEPTEMBER 26th 2025
The week’s final bell is in sight, but the market isn’t handing out candy—it’s handing out curveballs. Futures are green this morning on the back of the Fed’s favorite inflation metric, PCE, coming in as expected. Translation? Inflation is still sticky in spots, housing is cooling, but other sectors keep humming. Don’t get lulled—profit taking is still the dominant MO as we head into the final Friday of September.
Oh, and in case you missed it—Trump just pulled a full-on judo tariff flip. Heavy trucks, furniture, semiconductors, and pharma all got smacked with fresh trade taxes. The U.S. manufacturing playbook just got a page rewritten. Manufacture in the U.S.A. or else! TikTok deal is inked on the U.S. side, but China hasn’t RSVP’d yet. Stay nimble—this tape is moving like a cat on hot coals.
Premarket Movers Making Noise
Paccar — The Peterbilt truck maker roared 7% higher after Trump slapped a 25% tariff on imported heavy trucks starting Oct. 1. Domestic production is suddenly the belle of the ball.
Intel — Shares climbed 4.4% after reports that Intel has approached Apple, TSMC, and others to invest in its turnaround. Call it a Silicon Valley SOS.
Furniture stocks — Got wrecked on tariff talk. RH tumbled 4%, while Wayfair and Williams-Sonoma dropped about 3%. Upholstered furniture just got upholstered with tariffs.
Semiconductors — Slipped as Trump considers forcing chipmakers into a 1:1 U.S. vs import ratio. STMicroelectronics fell 2%, while Marvell, TSMC, and Teradyne each dipped around 1%.
U.S. pharmaceuticals — Trump announced a 100% tariff on imported branded drugs unless companies build plants in the U.S. Eli Lilly, Abbvie, and Merck each gained ~1.5%, Amgen rose 1%. Novo Nordisk slipped 1%.
Concentrix — Plunged 20% after Q3 earnings missed expectations. Adjusted EPS came in at $2.78 vs. the $2.87 consensus. Investors aren’t forgiving.
Six Flags Entertainment — Popped 3.3% after activist investor Land & Buildings pitched a REIT spinoff of its real estate. Rollercoaster ride now includes real estate arbitrage.
Kenvue — Up 1.4% after Rothschild upgraded the Tylenol maker, saying there’s a path to value despite the stock’s ugly 20% drop this month.
Warner Bros Discovery — Slipped 1% on a downgrade at KeyBanc. Fundamentals don’t match the hype, says the street.
Riot Platforms — Jumped 4.6% after a Citigroup upgrade to Buy/High Risk. The bitcoin miner has been bleeding all week, but Friday brought a rebound.
Costco — Down 1% despite beating on earnings and revenue. EPS $5.87 vs. $5.80 expected, revenue $86.16B vs. $86.06B consensus. Membership income and e-com are surging, but stock lagged in 2025, up less than 3%.
Strengths – U.S. economy is proving resilient with PCE data on target and corporate earnings still showing strength in select sectors like retail membership models (Costco) and domestic pharma. Manufacturing tariffs could ignite long-term reshoring benefits for trucks, drugs, and chips.
Weaknesses – Sticky inflation remains in services and select goods. Housing is cooling fast, a red flag for broader consumer demand. Tariff shocks create sector whiplash—furniture, semis, and global supply chains are the weak links.
Opportunities – Tariffs may force a renaissance in U.S. production, creating fresh investment opportunities in reshoring plays. Pharma and truck makers stand to benefit. Activist moves (like Six Flags REIT idea) signal hidden value plays. Traders can exploit rotation into U.S.-centric sectors.
Threats – Government shutdown risk looms. Tariff escalation risks retaliatory moves from China. Sticky inflation keeps the Fed’s hand on the lever longer than markets want. Seasonal weakness in September can extend into October corrections if profit taking accelerates.
