It’s Hump Day, September 24th, and the countdown clock is ticking louder for a government shutdown. Question for the room: if AI can pass the hardest level of the CFA exam in minutes… shouldn’t we just let AI run Congress’ spreadsheets to avoid these shutdown dramas? Just a thought.
Yesterday’s pullback after Powell’s “valuations are stretched” comments has the market wobbling like a top at the top. Translation: the higher you climb, the dizzier the fall feels. Traders are now waiting on September’s CPE data to see if it shifts the Fed’s next move.
Mortgage refis are stalling, AI capex headlines keep dropping, and OpenAI’s mega-build plans are scaring the locals like a Godzilla sequel. Here’s the kicker: 55 companies are up 50%+ this month… yet only six are profitable. Can you spell “1999 dot-com déjà vu”?
Premarket Movers Making Noise
Alibaba — +9.3%. U.S.-listed shares surged as the Chinese giant pledged to pump billions into AI model development and rolled out fresh products. Beijing meets big bet.
Lithium Americas — +69%. Reuters says Trump’s team may scoop up a 10% stake. A government looking at mining plays? That’s energy geopolitics with a MAGA twist.
Oracle — -1.4%. Still facing the TikTok drama. Investors asking: how much control does Larry Ellison really get over that algorithm?
Micron — -1%. Posted better-than-expected earnings and upbeat guidance, but profit-taking is hitting a stock that’s already doubled in 2025.
Coinbase — +1.2%. Launched the x402 Foundation with Cloudflare to create universal AI-driven payment rails. Bitcoin joins the party, up alongside it.
MillerKnoll — +1%. Furniture maker beat estimates. Proof that even couches can rally.
Douglas Elliman — +1%. Under probe for alleged insider trading tied to a failed takeover bid. Traders shrug—for now.
Microsoft — -1%. Admitted its current chip cooling tech is limiting future AI expansion. Testing new microfluidics, but the street isn’t impressed.
Nvidia — +0.6%. A small rebound after its worst day since late August. Still the golden child of AI, but the shine is showing scuff marks.
Strengths: The AI trade remains the market’s rocket fuel. Every press release with “AI” in it still moves billions. Liquidity remains heavy, and sector rotation is alive—even if uneven.
Weaknesses: Valuations are stretched like yoga pants in a buffet line. Powell’s caution hit home: the market knows it’s pricey. Mortgage refis and housing softness are telling you the consumer’s not unlimited.
Opportunities: Lithium, chips, and crypto rails. Government stake rumors and new payment standards create fresh speculation windows. Traders who catch the pivot zones can ride volatility into profit.
Threats: Government shutdown countdown, rising political risk, and over-levered growth names trading like it’s 1999. If CPE comes in hot, expect the algos to treat the tape like a piñata.
