WTF PRE-MARKET REPORT TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16th 2025
The Setup
The Fed meeting kicks off today, and the script is playing out in textbook fashion. Yesterday’s Fed drift pushed markets to fresh highs—classic “buy the rumor” behavior ahead of tomorrow’s expected 0.25% rate cut. The QQQ has now stacked 10 green closes in a row, with the Mag 7 doing the heavy lifting.
Add in the geopolitics: Trump is heading to London today to wheel and deal with the U.K., with $10B in tech deals on the table and tariff talk simmering in the background. Meanwhile, Oracle is teed up with the TikTok deal, Meta Connect is ready to blast AI headlines into the market this week, and Retail Sales came in hotter than expected—proving the consumer still has firepower.
Translation? The market tide is rolling higher, but the undercurrent of politics and policy risk is pulling harder by the day.
Premarket Movers:
Oracle (ORCL) — Shares jumped 5% after CBS reported Oracle is part of the consortium ready to keep TikTok alive in the U.S. pending a U.S.–China framework deal. Oracle may become the ultimate “middleman” for data and dollars.
Dave & Buster’s (PLAY) — Down 16% after earnings whiffed badly. EPS came in at $0.40 vs $0.91 expected. Investors aren’t playing games with this one.
Novo Nordisk (NVO) — Up 3% after its experimental weight-loss drug Cagrilintide showed an 11.8% weight reduction over 68 weeks. Wall Street is feasting on this news.
Chipotle (CMG) — Higher by 2% after approving another $500M for buybacks, bringing the war chest to $750M. Burritos and balance sheets—both oversized.
Adtran (ADTN) — Down 8% after announcing a $150M convertible senior notes offering. Dilution never tastes good.
Nvidia (NVDA) — Edged 0.3% lower after weak demand reports for its China-only RTX6000D chip. Beijing also turned up the heat with fresh anti-monopoly accusations.
Rocket Lab (RKLB) — Off 4% after announcing plans to sell up to $500M in common stock. That’s a lot of rocket fuel, but investors don’t like the dilution gravity.
Oscar Health (OSCR) — Down 4% after pricing a $355M convertible notes offering. The market’s prescription? Caution.
Denny’s (DENN) — Up 1.5% after JCP Investment Management and Jumana Capital disclosed a 9.4% activist stake. Looks like Denny’s is about to serve up more than just pancakes.
ArcBest (ARCB) — Higher by 1% after increasing its share repurchase program to $125M. Trucking along with shareholder returns.
Strengths: Market momentum remains intact with QQQ logging 10 straight gains, powered by Mag 7. Strong retail sales reinforce consumer resilience, fueling bullish sentiment into Fed week.
Weaknesses: Earnings cracks are showing up in second-tier names like Dave & Buster’s and Adtran. China’s scrutiny on Nvidia and analog chip makers adds another layer of regulatory risk for semis.
Opportunities: Oracle’s TikTok positioning could be the crown jewel catalyst in cloud and AI. Meta Connect will pump AI headlines into the market. Trump’s London trip could unlock fresh tech flows. Tomorrow’s rate cut could provide another push for rotation and breakout plays.
Threats: A potential government shutdown looms as fiscal deadlines approach. Trump may be stirring global tariff pots, but he can’t touch the Fed yet. Combine politics, policy, and rate moves—and you’ve got volatility simmering under the surface.
