WTF PREMARKET REPORT Thursday, AUGUST 21st, 2025
Five straight red days on Wall Street—welcome to August, the month where liquidity dries up, algo games get nastier, and traders start wondering if the market is allergic to gains. Futures are lower again this morning as investors digest mixed retail sales data, tariff overhang, and a Fed that can’t seem to agree if September is “cut time” or “sit tight.” Jobless claims are ticking higher as well as trade term chatter between the U.S. and EU ironing out, and the annual Jackson Hole symposium kicking off today, and you’ve got yourself a stew of uncertainty simmering into Powell’s speech tomorrow.
Oh, and for the fun stuff: Walmart is battling tariffs while hiking guidance, ESPN’s new app launches today, and Chipotle has decided burritos deserve air support—drone delivery begins. Welcome to 2025.
Premarket Movers
Today’s Premarket Movers
Walmart (WMT) — Down more than 2%. The big-box giant beat on revenue but missed on adjusted EPS (68¢ vs. 74¢ expected). Still, Walmart raised its full-year outlook, though rising tariffs are eating into margins.
Nordson Corp. (NDSN) — Popped 5% premarket after reporting better-than-expected earnings and revenue. Management lifted sales guidance above midpoint for the year.
Cracker Barrel (CBRL) — Off 2%. Not because of biscuits, but because its new logo sparked a round of Twitter/X criticism. Branding is apparently risk capital in 2025.
Instacart (CART) — Dropped 3%. Wedbush downgraded to underperform, citing tougher competition in grocery delivery.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) — Up 3% after Morgan Stanley slapped an overweight rating, expecting its upcoming quarterly results to provide a positive catalyst.
Broadstone Net Lease (BNL) — Rose nearly 2% after a rare double upgrade from Goldman Sachs, who now sees reliable earnings growth and valuation upside.
