The Market Mood
Futures are moving sideways this morning after two solid weeks of upside—translation: the tape is due for a breather.
Big picture catalysts this week:
Trump + Ukraine — White House meetings with EU leaders and Ukraine’s president may bring headlines hinting at an endgame for the Russia war.
Retail Earnings Week — The spotlight is on consumer health. Walmart, Home Depot, Target are the headliners. Will the consumer still carry this market, or is spending starting to sag?
Fed Minutes + Jackson Hole — The minutes midweek will give hints of Fed whispers, but the real focus is Powell’s Friday speech at the annual Jackson Hole symposium. Expect volatility around policy tone.
Sector Rotation — Solar stocks remain in play after Friday’s Treasury clarifications on Trump’s tax credits. Rotation is alive, and the money flow says pay attention.
Premarket Movers at the Bell
Dayforce (DAY) ↑ 24% — Rocketing higher on reports private equity giant Thoma Bravo is circling for an acquisition.
Sunrun (RUN) ↑ 4% — Upgraded to Outperform at RBC, with Trump’s adjusted renewable tax credits providing a major tailwind.
Soho House (SHCO) ↑ 16% — Going private in a $2.7B deal led by MCR Hotels. Luxury lifestyle stocks are trading like they belong in the velvet rope club.
Nextracker (NXT) ↑ 4% — Guggenheim upgrade with a $74 target. Solar policy clarifications give trackers like NXT new juice.
Novo Nordisk (NVO) ↑ 4% — FDA approval for Wegovy in treating liver disease. Pharma moat gets deeper.
Terawulf (WULF) ↑ 9% — Partnering with AI firm Fluidstack on data center expansion, backed by Google’s $1.4B incremental support.
Tesla (TSLA) ↓ 1% — Discounting leases in the U.K. to move iron. The EV price war saga rolls on.
Crypto Corner — The Pause Before the Punch
Bitcoin fell 2% to $115,255 after setting a fresh all-time high near $124,500 last week, while Ether slid 4% to $4,283. More than $500M in forced liquidations flushed out 131,000 traders, including $123M in BTC longs and $178M in ETH longs. Hot inflation data dampened September rate cut hopes, and Treasury Secretary Bessent clarified Trump’s Bitcoin reserve will rely only on forfeited coins. Crypto stocks slipped too, with Bitmine Immersion (-6%) and Bullish (-3%) lower. Yet ETFs showed strength, logging $547M BTC inflows and a record $2.9B ETH inflows—a healthy cooldown, not collapse.
SWOT Analysis — Week of August 18
Strengths: The market’s resilience is intact after back-to-back green weeks. Retail earnings can stabilize sentiment. Solar sector rotation has policy tailwinds.
Weaknesses: Flat futures show exhaustion. Tesla discounting hints at EV softness. Fed remains boxed in by sticky services inflation.
Opportunities: 13F disclosures provide mimic trades. Renewables rotation is actionable. Private equity deals highlight appetite for growth stories.
Threats: Ukraine/Trump talks could shift risk tone. Fed Minutes and Powell’s Jackson Hole speech may reset September cut expectations. Tariff creep quietly erodes Q4 earnings.
