WTF PRE-MARKET REPORT – Wednesday, AUGUST 6th, 2025
Welcome to Hump Day on Wall Street – where earnings whiplash, Fed whisper wars, and tariff tremors all converge into one big midweek market migraine.
THE MARKETS, THE MOVES, THE MADNESS
Futures are drifting this morning as Wall Street tries to process a new round of earnings gut punches—AMD, Disney, Super Micro (SMCI), and Snap all down pre-market, where all issued weaker guidance, with executives citing a cocktail of tariff disruptions, slowing international demand, and “cautious consumer sentiment.” Translation: they’re bracing for a bumpy back half of the year.
Meanwhile, Fed speakers continue the soft pivot ballet—with several officials leaning into the idea that rate cuts are more probable in the 2nd half. Yesterday’s ISM data showed a slowing economy in the headlights. Add that to last week's large Jobs data revision of the labor market, and you’ve got a narrative shaping: the economy isn’t collapsing, but it’s clearly cooling.
Oil is trying to find a floor, but global demand signals are soft. That’s your macro backdrop.
Underneath it all, the market’s internals are wobbly but not broken. We’re still seeing money rotate—just less confidently. The Mag 7 are pausing. Retail is skittish. Small caps are rolling. But hey, it’s August. This is the month where traders either compound their edge—or collapse into chop.
WEDNESDAY SWOT ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS
Probable rate cuts are giving bulls some hopium.
Earnings resilience in certain sectors (e.g., semis & cloud infra outside of SMCI) still showing up selectively.
Volatility remains contained—no VIX spikes (yet) @17, which gives traders room to position for the turn.
WEAKNESSES
Guidance cuts across major names (Disney, AMD, SMCI, Snap) suggest Q3/Q4 might be rocky.
Tariff shocks are now bleeding into margins—what looked like headlines last week is now hitting spreadsheets.
Economic data showing fatigue
OPPORTUNITIES
Tactical trades on earnings fades and bounces are alive—August is a sniper’s month - watch for Dead cat bounces.
Watch for sector rotation opportunities—especially into utilities, staples, and dividend payers if slow-growth sticks.
Mean reversion trades in tech names are setting up if markets get oversold this week.
THREATS
A surprise tariff escalation or Fed flip could crush any retracement attempt.
Retail sentiment is fragile—one sharp selloff and FOMO turns to GTFO.
Chop zone risk—low liquidity in August means fakeouts and traps. Protect the flywheel.
